New laws make it illegal for drivers to handle a phone for any reason

Touching the screen to scroll a music playlist, browse the internet, take a photograph or play a mobile game are now punishable by £200 fine and 6 points

The stringent rules will also apply when stopped at a red light or stuck in traffic

Exemptions only for 999 calls and phone payments at tolls and drive-throughs

New laws don’t apply for touching a device in a secure mount on the windscreen

Motorists CAN be punished for touching a phone in a cradle under different rules

Drivers hit with minimum £200 fine and 6 points for handling a phone for any of the following reasons

– illuminating the screen

– checking the time

– checking notifications

– unlocking the device

– making, receiving, or rejecting a telephone or internet based call

– sending, receiving or uploading oral or written content

– sending, receiving or uploading a photo or video

– utilising camera, video, or sound recording functionality

– drafting any text

– accessing any stored data such as documents, books, audio files, photos, videos, films, playlists, notes or messages

– accessing an application

– accessing the internet
