If you have a valid driving license from any other country, you can drive in the UK for up 12 months. You are not required to obtain an International Driving Permit before traveling to the UK if your license is in English.

A provisional driving license allows you to drive on all UK roads except motorways, but you must be accompanied by a driving instructor, family member, or friend who is: Over 21 years old. Qualified to drive the type of vehicle you’re learning in. Held a full driving license for at least three years and The car you learn in must display ‘L’ plates. It costs £34 to apply online. The Driving license is accepted as an ID proof all across the UK.
How to apply for Provisional Driving License?
In order to apply, you’ll need to provide:
- an identity document unless you have a valid UK biometric passport
- addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
- your National Insurance number
You will also be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away
Once you have received your provisional driving license, your license/international license becomes invalid, even if there is still time left on your license. Please also bear in mind that once you have received your provisional license, you will not be permitted to drive around unaccompanied.
