Funding
Schools are free across Britain from reception class till A levels(+2). From the age of three, children are entitled to 15 hours of child care in England, up to 600 hours of funded early learning and childcare a year (around 16 hours a week in term time) in Scotland and in Wales up to 30 hours a week of childcare or early education
How to apply for free child care?
In England, you may be able to get additional 15 hours of free childcare (nursery)once your child turns 3 years old and stops when your child starts in reception class
To be eligible for 30 hours free childcare, you (or your partner if you have one) must have a National Insurance number and at least one of the following:
- British or Irish citizenship
- settled or pre-settled status, or been living in the UK before 1 January 2021 with the right to reside
- permission to access public funds
- once you are eligible, you need to reconfirm the eligibility every three months.
Safeguarding Children
Whilst it is parents and carers who have primary care for their children, local authorities,
working with partner organizations and agencies, have specific duties to safeguard and
promote the welfare of all children in their area. The Children Acts of 1989 and 2004 set
out specific duties: section 17 of the Children Act 1989 puts a duty on the local authority to
provide services to children in need in their area, regardless of where they are found;
section 47 of the same Act requires local authorities to undertake inquiries if they believe
a child has suffered or is likely to suffer significant harm. The Director of Children’s
Services and Lead Member for Children’s Services in local authorities are the key points
of professional and political accountability, with responsibility for the effective delivery of
these functions.
